- Early Years Celebrates 'Marvellous Middle' with Thai Traditions

At Mill Hill International School Thailand, we believe that the most profound learning happens when we bridge the gap between the classroom and the world around us. This week, our Nursery and Reception pupils—the Bees and the Geckos—participated in a truly special "Marvellous Middle" event that brought our current topic, On the Move, to life.
Connecting Through Culture
We were delighted to welcome a special local guest into our classrooms to help us explore the richness of Thai language and culture. The session provided a unique opportunity for our youngest learners to connect with their host country's heritage while developing their communication skills.
Discovering Ma Kaan Kluay
The highlight of the week was introducing the children to Ma Kaan Kluay. For those unfamiliar, this is a beloved traditional Thai toy: a "horse" crafted ingeniously from the stem of a banana tree.
Our pupils learned how Thai children in the past used natural materials to fuel their imagination. The Ma Kaan Kluay is not just a toy; it is a piece of history that encourages active play.
Learning on the Move
This activity linked perfectly with our term theme, On the Move. The children discovered that these banana stem horses only "come alive" through movement—requiring them to run, gallop, and explore their physical capabilities.
It was a morning filled with joy, cultural appreciation, and active learning, proving once again that creativity knows no bounds in the Early Years.
