  • A Very Special Delivery: How a Mystery Box Sparked Curiosity in Our EYFS Classroom
EYFS Curiosity Learning Activity | Mill Hill International School Thailand
May 14, 2026

At Mill Hill International School Thailand in Chiang Mai, learning begins with wonder.

This week, our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) class received a very unexpected visitor. A mysterious, heavily labelled brown box arrived at the classroom door — and the excitement was immediate. Children gathered around with wide eyes, filling the room with questions, guesses, and the kind of genuine curiosity that great early years education is built on.

When the box was carefully opened, the children discovered something wonderful: a fish of their very own.

Turning a Surprise into a Learning Opportunity

What followed was a naturally rich learning experience rooted in the EYFS framework. The children worked together to explore questions that were entirely their own:

  • Who sent it?
  • Where did it come from?
  • What should we call it?
  • How do we care for it?

These open-ended questions gave our youngest learners real opportunities to develop speaking and listening skills, build vocabulary, and practise early communication in a meaningful, child-led context.

From Curiosity to Mark-Making and Early Writing

The learning did not stop at conversation. Our EYFS teachers guided the children into mark-making and early writing activities, giving them purposeful reasons to record their thoughts, ask further questions, and suggest names for their new classroom companion.

This is exactly the kind of hands-on, curiosity-driven learning that defines the Early Years Foundation Stage approach at Mill Hill Thailand — where children are encouraged to explore, communicate, and develop a genuine love of learning from their very first days in school.
